The U.S Navy laid the keel for a Virginia-class submarine named after Adm. Hyman G. Rickover, director of the Bureau of Ships’ Naval Reactors branch in the late 1940s.
The ceremony took place Friday at a facility of General Dynamics‘ Electric Boat subsidiary in Quonset Point, R.I., and involved the installation of a steel plate that bore the initials of Darleen Greenert, the submarine’s sponsor and wife of retired Navy Adm. Jonathan Greenert, the service branch said Friday.
Construction on the submarine, designated as SSN 795, commenced Sept. 30, 2015.
The Navy expects to commission the USS Indiana (SSN 789) and christen the USS Vermont (SSN 792) this fall.
