NASA has awarded $43.5 million in contracts to 304 proposals selected for the initial phase of the Small Business Innovation Research program and 44 proposals for the first phase of the Small Business Technology Transfer initiative.
The SBIR and STTR Phase 1 contracts will run for six and 13 months respectively with up to $125,000 in funds, NASA said Saturday.
The selected proposals will cover the development of several technologies for space exploration missions including autonomous intelligence platforms for manned and unmanned spacecraft; an oscillating heat pipe for spacecraft’s thermal control system; Hall-effect thruster power processing unit; a room temperature electrolyzer; and superconductors for aircraft propulsion motors.
The space agency selected the proposals based on feasibility, technical merit, commercial potential, facilities, experience and qualifications of the participating organization.
NASA’s Ames Research Center in California oversees the STTR and SBIR programs for the agency’s space technology mission directorate.
