Janus Global Operations, under a U.S. State Department effort, has cleared two schools in the Iraqi city of Mosul of explosives stored by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
The Lenoir, Tenn.-based company said Thursday its deployed teams removed more than 700 tons of rubble from the Al Muthana Boys School and Al-Mansour Boys School using armored heavy equipment, autonomous drones and K-9 explosive-sniffing dogs.
The confiscated explosives and munitions included projectiles, mortar rounds, rockets, hand grenades, small arms ammunition, improvised explosive device-making equipment and almost 95 pounds of ordnance-related material.
Janus Global began its survey and clearance work at the two schools in January 2018 under the orders of the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement of the State Department’s Bureau of Political and Military Affairs.
The office is implementing programs and services that intend to reduce the harmful impact of war weapons.
Janus Global has been participating in clearance operations in Mosul since July 2017, less than two weeks after ISIS left the city.
