Huntington Ingalls Indutries‘Â Newport News Shipbuilding division has finished conducting initial sea trials of its latest Virginia-class submarine.
In this phase of testing, the SSN 789 or Indiana submarine performed its first submergence and exhibited high-speed maneuvers under and above water, HII said Friday.
“We are pleased with how Indiana performed and look forward to continuing our testing program before we deliver the boat to the U.S. Navy later this year,” said Dave Bolcar, vice president of submarine construction at HII-NNS.
The company initiated SSN 789’s construction in 2012 and had the submarine christened in 2017.
HII is building the submarine under a partnership with General Dynamics‘ Electric Boat subsidiary.
