General Dynamics‘ Bath Iron Works subsidiary commenced the construction of a new Arleigh Burke-class destroyer on May 17 in Bath, Maine.
The start of DDG 124 or the future USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr.‘s construction is marked by the cutting of the ship’s first 100 tons and a commemorative ceremony, the U.S. Navy said Thursday.
The destroyer takes the name of retired Col. Harvey Barnum Jr., a former U.S. Marine Corps officer who received a Medal of Honor for his service during the Vietnam War.
The ship’s building commencement follows the fabrication start of DDG 125 or the future USS Jack H. Lucas, the ship that will be the first Arleigh Burke-class destroyer equipped with the Flight III configuration.
Both ships will employ Aegis baseline technology for anti-air and ballistic missile defense capacities.
