Cray, Hitachi Provide Supercomputers for Japan Weather Bureau - top government contractors - best government contracting eventCray, in partnership with Japanese conglomerate Hitachi, has provided the Japan Meteorological Agency with two Cray XC50 supercomputers. Hitachi serves as the prime contractor and systems integrator on the project.

The systems have been installed at JMA’s facility in Kiyose, Tokyo, and will assist the weather bureau in its atmospheric and oceanographic modeling, and weather forecasting functions, Cray said Monday.

Each of the two XC50 supercomputers runs on an Intel Xeon processor and features three Lustre file systems. When combined, the machines are expected to deliver as much as 18 petaflops of computational power.
