The U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research has granted a $4.8 million award to Florida International University for the launching of a new research center dedicated to developing origami or foldable antennas.
Stavros Georgakopoulos, associate professor at the university’s department of electrical and computer engineering, will serve as the leader of the Center for Physically Reconfigurable and Deployable Multifunctional Antennas, FIU said Wednesday.
The Air Force requires further development of this reconfigurable antenna technology for use in small compartments launched into space to provide communications and sensing.
The center intends to partner with government and industry to strengthen capacities as a research and development hub for new antenna technologies.
Georgakopoulos originally invented origami electromagnetic technology under an Emerging Frontier in Research and Innovation grant from the National Science Foundation.
