SunPower has begun to operate a solar photovoltaic array the company installed at a U.S. Air Force base in California as part of a 25-year power purchase agreement with the military branch.
USAF said Wednesday the 28-megawatt photovoltaic system at the Vandenberg AFB was unveiled at a dedication ceremony held Tuesday.
“This solar farm represents a partnership and ability for us to explore renewable and clean energy for the base,” said Col. Gregory Wood, vice commander of the 30th Space Wing.
The system is equipped with SunPower’s Oasis power plant technology and designed to generate up to 54,500 megawatt hours of energy a year, the company said Tuesday.
Alabama-based Regions Bank provided the capital needed to execute the Vandenberg facility’s solar project.
