Raytheon has developed a prototype ground-based system designed to collect and process space surveillance data for disaster and threat response applications.
The company said Friday it designed the prototype system in an effort to help first responders and military troops obtain data from the Space Based Infrared System as part of the U.S. Air Force‘s Future Operationally Resilient Ground Evolution Mission Data Processing Application Framework.
Karen Casey, an engineering fellow at Raytheon, said that company’s technology offering seeks to provide commercial sector access to new data.
“For missile warning information, we’ll have a platform available for every security level. But we’ll also have apps for fire detection, early warnings of volcanic activity, agricultural changes and electric power consumption, to name a few,” Casey added.
Raytheon has tested its prototype with data from the company’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite and the Air Force’s SBIRS.
The service branch aims to kick off a bidding process for the FORGE program later this year.
