Parsons will serve as general contractor for construction support services to help Leidos provide aid in the Antarctic operations of the National Science Foundation.
Leidos selected Parsons through a competitive process to provide design, engineering and construction management services for the McMurdo Station refresh efforts, Parsons said Thursday.
The more than 60-year old McMurdo Station serves as NSF’s logistics hub for the U.S. Antarctic Program and was determined to require upgrades after an independent review in 2011.
The infrastructure update activity is intended to provide cost, energy and logistics efficiency and ensure a 35 to 50-year platform viability for the station.
Leidos supports the NSF’s presidential mandate to operate and maintain the seasonal field camps, research vessels and the three year-round research stations of the country’s Antarctic program.
The Reston, Va.-based company provides transportation; engineering and construction of onsite facilities; operations support and staff for science programs and logistics management that includes food and supplies procurement.
Leidos’s Antarctic Support Contract with the NSF also includes the operation of two research vessels.
