Avril Haines, who served as deputy director at the CIA and deputy national security adviser during the Obama administration, has been named a senior fellow at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
She will join other national security and space experts who collaborate with the laboratory’s technical professionals to advise U.S. military leaders and senior government officials on technology and policy matters, APL said Friday.
APL Director Ralph Semmel said Haines’ knowledge of global security issues will aid the organization in efforts to identify innovation approaches to help address challenges facing the country.
Haines previously advised then-President Obama as deputy counsel for national security affairs at the Office of the White House Counsel before she joined CIA.
She also worked as legal adviser to the National Security Council, deputy chief counsel for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and legal adviser at the State Department.
