Rolls-Royce has unveiled a situational awareness system meant to aid ship navigators who operate vessels at night and in adverse weather or congested waterways.
The company said Tuesday its Intelligent Awareness system works to collect data from multiple sensors to offer users a comprehensive view of a ship’s external surroundings through four user interface modes, augmented and virtual reality and a precision mode.
Iiro Lindborg, general manager for remote and autonomous operations at Rolls-Royce, said the navigation technology forms part of the company’s ongoing autonomous ship development effort.
Lindborg added the company designed the AI system to supplement basic data from radar and electronic chart display and information systems.
AI works to generate 3D vessel maps with light detection and ranging technology that can integrate with a global positioning system, Rolls-Royce noted.
