The U.S. Marine Corps has declared initial operational capability for the Northrop Grumman-built AN/TPS-80 ground/air task-oriented radar.
Northrop said Wednesday the first two G/ATOR systems will be deployed to the Marine Air Control Squadrons 1 and 2.
G/ATOR reached initial operational capability after Northrop delivered the first six radar systems to the Marine Corps as part of the low-rate initial production phase.
The milestone confirms that the radar platform is ready for operational use and that the production systems, spares, logistics support items and documentation have been tested and validated.
Northrop serves as the developer and system integrator of G/ATOR and is also under contract to deliver logistics services in support of the program.
G/ATOR is designed to provide detection and tracking assistance to help engage threats as well as air traffic control support.
