Northrop Grumman has partnered with the West Basin Municipal Water District in California to begin a pilot project for the company’s Redondo Beach facility to use recycled water in three cooling towers.
The company said Thursday it aims to save up to 16 million gallons of drinking water each year through the water recycling initiative and reduce water consumption by 20 percent across the organization through 2020.
The California Department of Water Resources offered Proposition 84 funds to support Northrop’s project.
California Water Service designed and installed the meter for the company.
“Given that southern California is vulnerable to periodic droughts, sometimes quite serious ones, our company wanted to do its part to reduce our impact on the region’s supply of drinking water,” said John Murnane, vice president of global operations at Northrop and manager of its Space Park/El Segundo site.
The company noted that its Redondo Beach facility has reduced water use by 25.6 million gallons during the past three years.
