The U.S. Navy has announced it will commission the guided-missile destroyer to be named USS Ralph Johnson on March 14, at Columbus Street Pier, Charleston, South Carolina.
Georgeann McRaven, wife of retired Adm. Bill McRaven, will order the destroyer to service as the ship’s sponsor; while U.S. Marine Corps commandant Gen. Robert Neller will provide the commissioning’s principal address, the Navy said.
The future USS Ralph Johnson, the 114th DDG and 65th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, was designed to participate in air, surface and subsurface missions.
Huntington Ingalls Industries built the ship that honors the name of Marine Corps vet Ralph Henry Johnson who performed a sacrificial act during service in the Vietnam War.
