The U.S. Navy has announced it will commission the SSN 788 to be named USS Colorado during a ceremony that will take place Saturday at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.
Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) will serve as the commissioning ceremony’s principal speaker, while Annie Mabus, daughter of Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, will order the USS Colorado’s activation as ship sponsor, the Navy said Thursday.
The Virginia-class Block III fast attack submarine, built by General Dynamics’ Electric Boat subsidiary, will make use of two large-diameter payload tubes designed to each store and launch six Tomahawk missiles.
Submarines in the Virginia class are designed to perform anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, special operations support, reconnaissance and other naval operations within littoral and deep waters.
