The U.S. Navy has begun to incorporate new technology platforms into the Block III version of the Boeing-built F/A-18Â Super Hornet fighter jet in an effort to address emerging threats, the National Interest reported Wednesday.
Some of the technologies that will be installed on the Block III Super Hornet aircraft include the Advanced Targeting Forward Looking Infrared system and the Lockheed Martin-made Infrared Search and Track platform.
ATFLIR is a laser technology-based system designed to help pilots locate and home in on targets at a range of more than 40 nautical miles and altitude of over 50,000 feet, while the IRST platform works to provide an air-to-air targeting capability through heat signal detection.
The service branch also has procured other systems for installation on the new fighter jets such as the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System, ALR-67v3 radar warning receiver, APG-73 radar upgrades, Multifunctional Information Distribution System, ALQ-214v5 electronic countermeasures platform and High Order Language Mission Computers.
