Battelle Team Hits Milestone in DOE-Backed Carbon Capture, Storage Project - top government contractors - best government contracting event

A Battelle-led team has injected 1.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into a deep rock formation as part of a Department of Energy project that sought to demonstrate carbon capture, utilization and storage processes.

The Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership conducted the scientific demonstration effort built upon DOE’s 10-year-old goal to store CO2 beneath the earth’s surface, Battelle said Monday.

MRCSP currently has nearly 40 members from industry and academia.

Battelle has worked with Core Energy to monitor, verify and account for carbon within depleted oil fields across the Northern Reef Trend in Michigan during the third phase of injection that commenced in 2013.

The partnership also tested multiple methods to track and quantify the amount of CO2 that retained in the rock after the oil removal process.
