A team led by BAE Systems has secured a $227.5 million contract from the British defense ministry to update the power and propulsion systems of the U.K. navy’s fleet of Type 45 destroyers.
The defense ministry said Wednesday the Power Improvement Project will replace two generators of all six Type 45 ships with three larger units that will work to deliver propulsion.
The team of BAE, BMT Defence Services and Cammell Laird will perform physical conversion work at Cammell Laird’s shipyard in Merseyside, England.
BAE said its team won both lots of the PIP competition, including one lot focused on procurement, design and integration of new systems, and another for the physical installation and replacement of existing equipment.
PIP is intended to boost the Type 45 destroyers’ capacity to perform security missions in support of U.K. and NATO interests, BAE added.
The initial set of upgrades is scheduled to be complete in 2021 and follow-on ship conversions are slated to occur until the early 2020s.
