The National Science Foundation has partnered with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google to support research projects in the data science and engineering field.
NSF said Wednesday it will obligate nearly $30 million to the Critical Techniques, Technologies and Methodologies for Advancing Foundations and Applications of Big Data Sciences and Engineering program.
AWS, Google and Microsoft have each pledged to donate up to $3 million in cloud computing resources for BIGDATA projects over the next three years.
NSF and its three industry partners seek to drive strategies that can help address data management, analysis and modeling challenges in the first year of the partnership.
The public-private collaboration will offer 21 grant recipients a chance to use cloud-based storage, computing and analytics tools to aid their research efforts.
BIGDATA will aid researchers who seek to push the boundaries of data science through computer science, statistics, computational science and math studies, as well as those who aim to build data-based applications for various disciplines.
The program is part of a fiscal 2017 portfolio of NSF-backed big data and data science research, education and research infrastructure projects worth more than $100 million combined.
