USS Fitzgerald to Undergo Restoration at Huntington Ingalls Shipyard - top government contractors - best government contracting eventThe U.S. Navy‘s guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald arrived in Pascagoula, Mississippi on Friday to undergo repair and upgrade efforts at a Huntington Ingalls Industries  shipyard.

A heavy-lift vessel transported the Arleigh Burke-class ship from Yokosuka, Japan and will stay in the Port of Pascagoula for several days before the destroyer heads to its designated pier space at HII’s facility, the Navy said Friday.

USS Fitzgerald sustained damage when it collided with a a Philippine-flagged container ship in June of last year.

HII is contracted to restore the destroyer’s electronic warfare equipment; hull mechanical and electrical systems; power systems; and command, control, communications, computers and intelligence assets.

The Navy expects the company to complete restoration work in 2019 before the service branch conducts tests the functionality and operational capability of USS Fitzgerald systems.
