Orbital ATK has received a $23 million initial contract from the U.S. Air Force to commence full-rate production of hard target void sensing fuze assemblies.
FMU-167/B HTVSF is a cockpit programmable fuze designed to help the service branch destroy hard and deeply-buried targets, the company said Wednesday.
The award follows a low-rate initial production contract that the Air Force awarded to Orbital ATK in 2016.
“As threats continue to develop stronger and deeper buried facilities, they are developing greater challenges for conventional munitions,” said Pat Nolan, vice president and general manager of the missile products division within Orbital ATK’s defense systems group.
The company developed its all-electronic FMU-167/B technology using sensors, algorithms and hardened electronics in an effort to help address a demand for penetrating weapons.
