A Northrop Grumman subsidiary has collaborated with U.K.-based National Air Traffic Services to modernize a ground-to-air radio communications system at London’s Heathrow Airport.
Park Air Systems deployed new Park Air T6 radios for the airport’s Sapphire air traffic control system that works to help pilots and ATC personnel communicate with each other, Northrop said Wednesday.
T6 is designed to comply with EUROCAE Interoperability Standards for VoIP ATM, as well as employs a low-power consumption technology and does not contain any hazardous material.
Sapphire uses Park Air Systems’Â MARC Server built to help operators remotely monitor, control and manage communications system components with the use of computers and mobile devices.
Northrop noted that Heathrow airport is the first to receive a safety authorization to implement radios under the latest T6 wave.
The project was the first of multiple communications system replacement efforts planned for U.K. airports.
