Richard White, president of SSL‘s government systems business, predicts that satellite production efforts in the near future could take place in space, he told The Washington Post in an interview published Friday.
White added he believes that all activities on Earth will eventually be performed on-orbit.
SSL, a subsidiary of Maxar Technologies, is working with the Defense Advanced Projects Agency to build a robotic spacecraft designed to perform on-orbit satellite refueling and repair missions.
DARPA’s Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites program aims to service satellites on the geosynchronous orbit, where the Defense Department keeps satellites that aid missile launch detection, precision weapons guidance, surveillance and communications.
SSL also supports NASA‘s Restore-L program that seeks to create an in-orbit servicing spacecraft for satellites in low-Earth orbit.
