The city of San Diego, California, plans to award Lockheed Martin‘s Sikorsky subsidiary a contract to supply one S-70i Black Hawk helicopter.
Lockheed said Monday a specialist outfitter will modify a baseline configuration of the multimission helicopter platform from Sikorsky into a Firehawk model for use by the San Diego Fire Department.
Firehawk is designed to have a 1,000-gallon water tank, a medical interior, a single cockpit layout and extended landing gear.
The S-70i variant employs wide-chord rotor blades, a digital cockpit system, an integrated vehicle health management system and a terrain and obstacle avoidance system designed to notify the helicopter’s crew of potential ground hazards.
Sikorsky has delivered two S-70i helicopters to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
