A U.S. military official said the country is confident that there are U.S.-manufactured fighter jets that can compete to replace Germany’s fleet of 85 Tornado fighter aircraft, Reuters reported Thursday.
The official’s statement came days after the German defense ministry said it considers the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft as its primary option to replace its Tornado jets by 2025.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a joint project of BAE Systems, Airbus and Leonardo.
The German ministry has issued a request for information on Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin-built F-35 aircraft and Boeing-made F/A-18E/F and F-15 jets.
The European country expects the U.S. government to submit its response by March 31.
The ministry noted that it will use the responses to assess potential options as part of the process that could potentially lead to a solicitation and possible acquisition over the next 10 years, the report added.
