Lockheed Martin has shipped the next weather satellite in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite–R series to a company facility in Titusville, Florida, to undergo final processing and pre-launch preparation.
GOES-S, the second of four satellites in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s GOES-R constellation, is scheduled for March 1 liftoff atop United Launch Alliance‘s Atlas V 541 rocket at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Lockheed said Friday.
The satellite is designed to aid short-term weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, maritime forecasts, seasonal predictions, drought outlooks and space weather predictions along with other GOES-R spacecraft.
Lockheed oversees the design, production, tests and launch processing of the GOES-R satellite series.
NOAA funds, oversees and will operate the constellation while NASA manages the acquisition and development of GOES-R spacecraft and instruments.
