The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has announced a proposer’s event in support of the agency’s plan to initiate an effort to develop a maritime situational awareness network.
The agency said Wednesday the Ocean of Things program seeks to form a sensor network made from thousands of ocean-deployed floats designed to collect environmental, situational and activity data that would be transmitted to a cloud network to undergo real-time analysis.
Floats to be used for the effort are required to be made from environmentally safe materials; conform with laws; pose no threat to marine life; and be able to function under austere conditions for at least a year.
The effort also requires the development of a cloud-based platform and analytic capacities that can display float status and performance; process oceanographic and meteorological data; detect nearby vessels; and identify maritime activity indicators.
Interested proposers may register here for a chance to share their ideas at the proposer’s event to be conducted Jan. 4, 2018 at the DARPA Conference Center in Arlington, Virginia.
