The aerospace and defense contractor aims to increase the aircraft’s resistance to corrosion and extend its service life by an additional 3,000 flight hours under a potential $50 million contract awarded in April.

Dan Gillian, F/A-18 program manager at Boeing, told Flightglobal in an interview the company expects to begin integration of Block III features onto a modified Super Hornet unit sometime in 2022.

The modification package will cover new fuel tanks, Raytheon-made radar technology and Block II and IV integrated defensive electronic countermeasures systems.
