Saab to Supply Additional Radars for Navy LCS Program - top government contractors - best government contracting eventGeneral Dynamics has placed an order for Saab medium-range surveillance radar systems for installation on two future U.S. Navy littoral combat ships.

Saab said Thursday it will provide Sea Giraffe AMB naval radars designated as AN/SPS-77 for the military branch’s LCS 28 and LCS 30 ships.

Erik Smith, president and CEO of Saab Defense and Security USA, said the company is contracted to deliver Sea Giraffe radar systems for five classes of surface ships under three separate Navy programs.

Smith added technology will work to aid the service branch’s air and surface surveillance and air traffic control management operations.

General Dynamics also awarded Saab an additional contract that includes options for delivery of 11 more radars to the LCS program through 2024.

Sea Giraffe AMB technology has been installed on LCS 2 (USS Independence), LCS 4 (USS Coronado), LCS 6 (USS Jackson), LCS 8 (USS Montgomery), LCS 10 (USS Gabrielle Giffords) and LCS 12 (USS Omaha).

The Navy also plans to deploy the three-dimensional radar system on the U.S. Coast Guard’s new Offshore Patrol Cutter.

Saab has developed an AN/SPN-50 variant of Sea Giraffe AMB for potential use onboard aircraft carrier and amphibious assault class ships in an effort to address air traffic control requirements of the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command.
