A subsidiary of Leonardo DRS has secured a contract from the U.S. Navy to supply four Integrated Voice Communications Systems for the military branch’s Aegis cruisers and destroyers.
DRS Technologies Canada received the award through a larger IVCS contract with the Navy and will perform delivery in September 2018, Leonardo DRS said Wednesday.
The IVCS, also called the Shipboard Integrated Communications System, is a shipboard communications switch technology that works to facilitate secure tactical communications for Navy operators.
“[The contract] brings the total number of systems ordered up to 16 out of a possible 30 under our existing contract,” said Martin Munro, vice president and general manager of DRS Technologies Canada.
The company produced ICVS platforms for the Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers under a previous contract that ran from 2009 to 2014.
DRS Technologies Canada has integrated the communications system into more than 150 warships worldwide.
