The Australian government has unveiled an estimated $1 billion project aimed to augment the army’s digital command, control and communications systems.
Australia’s defense ministry said Tuesday the Land 200 Tranche 2 Project will employ tactical communications network services from Harris and battle management system software updates from Elbit Systems.
“Together they form the Battlefield Command System, which allows commanders to plan, monitor, direct and review operations in real time,” said Christopher Pyne, Australian minister for defense industry.
Defense Minister Marise Payne added that the effort aims to advance the Australian army’s transition from analog to digital communications systems and build on its speed in decision-making and capability to share battlefield information.
Australian industry contributions are at an estimated $163 million for acquisition, with the possibility to reach up to approximately $303 million during sustainment, the defense ministry noted.
The government also anticipates Land 200 Tranche 2 to support hundreds of jobs in the country.
“Harris’ Australian workforce will increase by 70 to 120 positions in Brisbane and another 15 new positions will be established by their major subcontractor, Boeing Defense Australia,” said Pyne.
“Elbit’s Australian workforce to support Land 200 will grow by 70 to 122, with 67 in Brisbane and 55 in Melbourne,” he added.
