Amazon has opened a new 60,000-square-foot facility in Cambridge, England, that will house approximately 400 employees to perform research and development work on various technology platforms.
The Amazon Development Center Cambridge is the second R&D facility the company established in the U.K. and will accommodate machine learning professionals, data scientists, software engineers, mathematical modelers and knowledge engineers to work on the firm’s technology projects, the company said Thursday.
Those projects include the Amazon Alexa intelligent personal assistant that supports Amazon Echo devices, Prime Air drone-based package delivery system, Amazon Cloud Cam, voice-controlled speakers and other retail and machine learning platforms.
Amazon also partnered with the Cambridge LaunchPad program to help encourage young individuals to pursue a career in the field of science, technology, engineering and math.
The company plans to create 5,000 jobs in the U.K. this year in a move that would bring the company’s total workforce in the country to 24,000.
