Air Force Accepts STEM Scholarship Applications for 2018

The U.S. Air Force is accepting scholarship applications from students who aim to pursue a science, technology, engineering and math degree.

The military service said Monday it offers between $25,000 and $38,000 a year to help students major in one of the 19 STEM disciplines through the branch’s Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation Scholarship for Service Program.

Scholars who complete their degree will have an opportunity to join the Defense Department workforce.

“Our goal is to build a SMART community within the Air Force and DoD that enhances career development and technical collaboration,” said Ed Bujan, SMART Scholarship Program execution lead at the Air Force’s Personnel Center.

“The SMART Scholarship Program represents an important investment in attracting the top technical talent needed to support the DoD,” Bujan added.

Jacob Dodson, a 33-year-old research mechanical engineer, is one of 108 SMART scholars selected by the Air Force in 2017.

He currently leads a multiple research projects that aim to develop environment sensing technology for high-speed weapons systems.

Applications for the 2018 class are due Dec. 8.
