Robert Work, a 27-year U.S. Marine Corps veteran and former deputy secretary of the Defense Department, has been named a senior fellow at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
He will work with other APL senior fellows and technical professionals in efforts to help inform policy and technology decisions issued by U.S. senior government and military officials, APLÂ said Tuesday.
“[Work’s] broad expertise, particularly his insights on autonomy, artificial intelligence and human–machine collaboration, can help us extend the … work our scientists and engineers are doing for national defense, cybersecurity, health care and space,” said Ralph Semmel, an APL director.
The retired Marine Corps colonel previously served as undersecretary of the U.S. Navy, CEO of the Center for a New American Security and vice president for strategic studies at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments.
