Raytheon‘s Standard Missile-3 technology has engaged and intercepted a ballistic missile target off the coast of Scotland during a NATO-led multinational operational exercise.
The SM-3 test occurred as part of the Formidable Shield 17 missile defense exercise that replicated naval and air battle scenarios, Raytheon said Tuesday.
The company also provided Standard Missile-2 and Evolved Seasparrow Missile units for the event’s simulated cruise missile target engagement drills.
FS17, backed by the U.S. Navy and Missile Defense Agency, sought to assess the effectiveness of missile and air warfare systems from NATO member countries against various threats.
“Strong cooperation between allied nations and industry helps ensure we are ready to defeat complex threats around the world,” said Taylor Lawrence, president of Raytheon’s missile systems business.
Countries that participated in FS17 include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, U.K. and U.S.
