Sky and Space Global has conducted phone calls, instant messaging, voice recording and image transfers through the company’s constellation of three nanosatellites.
SAS said Tuesday the test run of its 3 Diamonds constellation marked the first time that a voice call was delivered using nanosatellites.
The company demonstrated the “store and forward” function of its satellite service, wherein a message was sent to 3 Diamonds, stored in satellite memory and downloaded to a receiver.
The test also showcased how SAS’ services can provide indoor connectivity through a radio frequency platform that is installed on a user’s outdoor space and is connected to an indoor Wi-Fi hotspot.
SAS aims to offer nanosatellite connectivity in remote locations and in markets that do not have access to a communications network infrastructure.
The company noted it will conduct additional tests to prepare for the commercial launch of its nanosatellites, with a goal to establish a 200-satellite constellation by 2020.
