The U.K. government’s defense science and technology laboratory has selected Leonardo to lead a group of U.K.-based companies in the demonstration of an active protection system prototype for the British army’s land vehicles.
Leonardo said Wednesday the team will demonstrate an operational APS prototype that will work to protect vehicles against live-fire weapons as part of the Icarus technology demonstrator program.
Icarus TDP aims to build a Modular Integrated Protection System Electronic Architecture, or MIPS EA, that will support the deployment of “best of breed” APS technologies designed to defeat a range of existing and future battlefield weapons.
The team will also establish an industry APS Community of Interest to make sure that the best APS platforms are evaluated for MIPS EA.
The Leonardo-led group includes:
- Abstract Solutions
- BAE Systems
- Brighton University
- Frazer-Nash
- Lockheed Martin’s U.K. subsidiary
- Roke Manor Research
- SCISYS
- Ultra Electronics
