Georgia Power has selected Bechtel to perform construction work on a two-reactor expansion project at a nuclear power plant located in Georgia.
Bechtel said Thursday it will build the third and fourth units of the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant under the supervision of Southern Nuclear.
Plant Vogtle units 3 and 4 will also be the first reactors to utilize the Westinghouse AP1000 advanced pressurized water reactor system which helps cool nuclear cores without a need for operator interventions and mechanical assistance.
Georgia Power urged the Georgia Public Service Commission to push through with the construction of the nuclear expansion project at Plant Vogtle in response to a comprehensive schedule, cost-to-complete and cancellation assessment.
Georgia PSC will review the recommendation and decide on the future of the Vogtle 3 and 4 construction project at the 17th Vogtle Construction Monitoring proceeding.
Barbara Rusinko, president of Bechtel’s government services and commercial nuclear power business, said that the company has committed to keeping the long-term future of nuclear power safe and reliable.
