NASA has ordered single-lens reflex cameras from Nikon for use at the agency’s astronaut training facilities on Earth and for the International Space Station’s vehicular recording activities.
Nikon said Friday it will supply NASA with 53 standard D5 SLR cameras that have not undergone any special modification.
D5 is designed to function in harsh environments, the company noted.
The agency used Nikon-made camera technology on its Apollo 15, Space Shuttle Columbia and Space Shuttle Discovery missions.
NASA also documented inspection and maintenance operations in space as well as examined solar panels and outer surfaces of the orbiting laboratory with the company’s digital SLR cameras.
