Deborah Lee James, former secretary of the U.S. Air Force, has been appointed as a member of Unisys‘ board of directors.

James brings more than three decades of homeland and national security experience to the board, Unisys said Monday.

“As someone who just recently led one of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, [James] understands that combating the growing range of threats that we all face across cyber, logistics and border security requires new thinking,” said Unisys President and CEO Peter Altabef.

Altabef added James’ private-sector work involving digital technologies is in line with Unisys’ future offerings.

James previously held senior leadership roles at Science Applications International Corp., including as senior vice president and director of homeland security as well as president of the company’s technical and engineering sector.

She also served as assistant secretary of defense for Reserve affairs at the Defense Department, where she advised the defense secretary on issues concerning National Guard and Reserve personnel worldwide.

James was a professional staff member on the House Armed Services Committee, where she served as senior adviser to the military personnel and compensation subcommittee, NATO’s burden-sharing panel and the HASC chairman’s member services team.
