Kay Kapoor, president of AT&T’s global public sector business, told Capitol File Magazine in an interview published Tuesday she believes science, technology, engineering and math careers offer women an opportunity to help shape the future of innovation.

Kapoor mentors female professionals in STEM fields and encourages students to find a mentor when they participate in internship programs, according to the magazine.

“The protege must be in the driver’s seat, actively managing the communication,” she said in the interview.

She estimated that women account for nearly 40 percent of all technology professionals in D.C. and added she believes the region’s startup ecosystem has the potential to support digital economy.

Kapoor assumed her current position in April after she previously led AT&T’s federal business group for four years. She will oversee the company’s work with the First Responder Network Authority to build and manage a national broadband network for first responders under a potential $6.5 billion contract awarded in late March.
