Lockheed Martin has announced the winners of a video challenge that aimed to encourage students to design a spacecraft that could help transport astronauts to Mars.
The company said Tuesday the challenge winners include an individual participant from D. Russell Parks Jr. High School in California as well as student teams from the John Adams and Woodrow Wilson middle schools in New Jersey.
The video challenge is part of Lockheed’s Generation Beyond program, which aims to foster interest in science, technology, engineering and math among students.
“Humanity’s next giant leaps in space deeply depend on students at the K-12 level pursuing careers in science and engineering,” said Rick Ambrose, executive vice president of Lockheed’s space systems business.
Ambrose, an inductee into Executive Mosaic‘s Wash100 for 2017, added that Generation Beyond intends to “make STEM learning fun and inspiring.”
The winners will be given $10,00 in cash, a tour around NASA‘s Kennedy Space Center and an opportunity to present their ideas to space exploration experts.
The winning videos are posted on Lockheed’s website.
