AWS Eyes GovCloud East Region Launch in 2018 - top government contractors - best government contracting eventAmazon Web Services plans to launch in 2018 a second region for its cloud platform designed to host regulated data workloads and sensitive information.

The AWS GovCloud (US-East) Region will work to provide government clients with additional disaster recovery options and help them comply with several regulatory requirements, the company said Tuesday.

These government regulations include the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, International Traffic in Arms Regulations, Defense Department impact levels 2 to 4 and Criminal Justice Information Services requirements.

AWS GovCloud (US) is an isolated region that works to provide hosting support for sensitive data workloads in the cloud and limits access to vetted U.S. citizens with AWS accounts.

Some of the agencies that use AWS GovCloud (US) include NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, General Services Administration’s 18F organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The company introduced the first region – AWS GovCloud (US-West) – in 2011.

The announcement came days after AWS announced plans to set up a new corporate campus in Fairfax County, Virginia, as part of expansion efforts.
