Parsons has won the Bronze Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts for its work on a bridge replacement project on Martha’s Vineyard island.
The company said Thursday it designed a drawbridge to replace the Lagoon Pond bridge, which was built in 1935, under a contract with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
Parsons added the new drawbridge will work to reduce the number of required bridge openings through an increased vertical clearance that can accommodate taller ships than the old bridge.
The design also includes marine traffic and lighting systems that align with current U.S. Coast Guard requirements as well as a closed-circuit television system to monitor marine traffic.
