Ernest Moniz, former secretary of the Energy Department, has joined clean energy company Tri Alpha Energy as a member of the board of directors.
Tri Alpha Energy CEO Steve Specker said in a statement published Thursday that Moniz will contribute his energy technology and policy development experience to help further the company’s fusion-based electricity generation initiatives.
Moniz has also been named CEO and co-chairman of the nonprofit Nuclear Threat Initiative in a move that takes effect June 1.
As energy secretary, Moniz oversaw DOE’s strategic partnerships with the 17 national laboratories, the Defense Department and national security organizations.
Moniz served as member of president’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology from 2009 to 2013 and as undersecretary of energy and associate director for science in the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy under the Clinton administration.
His four-decade career at MIT includes time as head of the physics department, founding director of the MIT Energy Initiative and director of the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment.
He currently serves as a professor of physics and a special adviser to the president at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
