A team comprised of US Ignite and Northeastern University has received a $6.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to lead a program that seeks to accelerate research on future wireless communication and networking technologies.
NSF said US Ignite and NSF will oversee the program office of the Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research program and collaborate with industry partners to support the development of wireless networks beyond 4G LTE and Wi-Fi.
PAWR aims to develop new wireless devices, communication techniques, networks, systems and services over the next seven years.
The PAWR Program Office will solicit and vet proposals to identify platforms for advanced wireless research and help plan the design, development, deployment and initial operations of the selected platforms, NSF added.
The PPO will also establish and manage each platform as well as document best practices throughout the lifecycle.
NSF expects to invest $50 million in PAWR including cash and in-kind contributions from more than 25 companies and industry associations.
The PPO will use the investments to support the selected wireless network platforms.
