BAE Systems has invested $31 million on the development of a new apprentice training facility in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria which will help the development of skills required to address complex engineering challenges.
BAE Systems said Monday the 86,000-square foot Central Training Facility will help offer a learning environment for approximately 1,000 craft and technical apprentices in training under electrical, mechanical and steelwork disciplines.
“The design and build of a nuclear powered submarine is one of the world’s most complex and technically demanding engineering challenges,” said Tony Johns, managing director of BAE Systems’ submarines business.
“The new facility will provide a modern learning environment to supplement the training our apprentices already receive.”
BAE Systems noted that the construction has begun on the training center which will cater to the company’s wider workforce and cover classrooms, craft workshops, offices and welfare facilities.
McBain Cooper and Wates Construction, which completed the design and build of BAE Systems’ Resolution Building, will lead the design and construction of the new facility respectively.
