Red Hat has provided a cloud-based container platform for a Switzerland-based railway operator’s information technology modernization and application development efforts.
Swiss Federal Railways implemented the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform to create digital services such as a mobile app designed to help passengers buy train tickets and view arrival and departure times in real time, Red Hat said Tuesday.
OpenShift is based on the Enterprise Linux operating system and designed to operate with cloud-native and container-based apps.
Baltisar Oswald, a software architect at Swiss Federal Railways, said the platform helps the rail operator reduce its running costs by nearly 50 percent.
Swiss Federal Railways consists of passenger traffic, freight, infrastructure and real estate divisions and operates a network of approximately 10,500 trains across Switzerland.
