The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has launched a project that looks to develop an automated software designed to monitor publicly available information on social media to identify potential terrorist threats, The National Interest reported Thursday.
Michael Peck writes the Force Protection in the Online Information Environment project aims to examine social media content to determine within foreign populations the intent to harm internationally deployed U.S. troops.
“It is a challenge to assess not only if expressed beliefs or attitudes are sincere, but also whether those beliefs or attitudes are a likely source of intentionality and action,” the agency said, according to the report.
The report said the software will also support privacy and avoid personally identifiable information in PAI as it goes through social media user activity and could potentially be used for commercial applications such as brand marketing, advertising, competitor analysis and organizational health assessments.
